Dogme Approach Lesson: “Exploring Travel Experiences”

Objective:

To engage students in a conversation-driven lesson using personal travel experiences and authentic materials.

Materials Needed:

  • Whiteboard/flipchart and markers
  • Authentic travel photos, brochures, or maps (printed or digital)
  • Access to online resources (optional)

Lesson Outline:

1. Discussion and Reflection (10 minutes)

  • Prompting Conversation (5 minutes):
    • Start with a general discussion about travel. Ask students about their favorite destinations, past travel experiences, or places they dream of visiting.
  • Reflection (5 minutes):
    • Engage students in reflecting on their travel experiences. Encourage them to share stories, experiences, or anecdotes related to their own or their family’s travels.

2. Authentic Material Exploration (15 minutes)

  • Authentic Material Introduction (5 minutes):
    • Introduce authentic travel materials (photos, brochures, maps) related to various destinations. Use them as prompts to elicit discussions about different places.
  • Visual Exploration (10 minutes):
    • Allow students time to explore the visuals individually or in pairs. Encourage them to describe what they see, ask questions, or share their thoughts about the destinations shown.

3. Language Focus (15 minutes)

  • Language Enhancement (10 minutes):
    • Based on the discussions and visuals, highlight useful vocabulary, phrases, or grammar related to traveling. Write these on the board, ensuring students understand their meanings and usage.
  • Guided Practice (5 minutes):
    • Engage students in a quick practice session using the highlighted vocabulary or phrases. Encourage them to create sentences or dialogues related to travel using the newly learned language.

4. Storytelling and Personal Narratives (20 minutes)

  • Personal Storytelling (15 minutes):
    • Encourage students to narrate a travel story or create an imaginary trip using the introduced vocabulary and phrases. They can describe a favorite trip or invent a dream vacation.
  • Sharing (5 minutes):
    • Invite volunteers to share their stories or imaginative travel experiences with the class, promoting language use and creativity.

5. Reflection and Conclusion (10 minutes)

  • Reflection Time (5 minutes):
    • Lead a reflection on the lesson. Ask students about their favorite part of the discussion and what they learned about traveling or using English in a real-life context.
  • Conclusion (5 minutes):
    • Summarize the key points from the lesson. Encourage students to continue exploring and sharing their travel experiences in English outside the classroom.

Assessment:

Evaluate students based on their active participation in discussions, their use of new vocabulary/phrases during conversations, and their ability to narrate a travel story or describe an imaginary trip.

This Dogme-inspired lesson promotes natural conversation, encourages personal engagement, and uses authentic materials to enhance language learning within the context of travel experiences. Adjust the discussion and activities based on students’ interests and engagement levels.
